The initial reception of the new Curved TVs from Samsung and LG this year by consumers, retailers and reviewers has been mixed to say the least.

Personally, I think they look quite attractive on the whole – most people I’ve spoken to agree. On the same token though, I can’t help but ask the question, “Why is it curved?”. The Korean manufacturers tell us it makes the TV viewing experience more immersive. So what exactly is the idea behind this?

Well, you may not have noticed before but most projector screens in movie theatres are curved – some more so than others. It’s easy to see how this would be effective on a screen hundreds of times larger than your average big screen TV, however not so easy to see how this translates to the TV in your lounge room.

If you’re seated right in front at the ideal viewing position, then yes absolutely it helps – our eyes are curved and it means they don’t have to work as hard re-focusing when looking side to side on a flat screen. It gives you the feeling that the image is wrapping around you, drawing you in. Additionally, we can then perceive this as a greater sense of depth, making it feel more ‘3D-like’ without being 3D at all.

The obvious drawback though, is the viewing angle. When sitting out to one side, the angle of view to the far side of the TV is significantly improved, however the nearside is significantly reduced! And while we’re told there will be special brackets available, if you want to wall mount your TV, a curved one may not be for you for obvious reasons .

On the other hand, there is definitely a niche who will love this. If you don’t often have more than a few people watching TV, or if you simply love the latest and greatest, then as I said to begin with, there’s something about these curved TVs that’s very attractive.
