In the middle of a fairly impressive list of Digital Imaging products Sony have brought to the market in the last 18 months, we find the PXW-X70 – a very exciting, entry level professional camcorder.

Sony PXW-X70 Camcorder
Differing from its older siblings the X160 and X180, the X70 has a much larger 1” CMOS sensor to give a more cinematic look with a shallower depth of field that’s not possible on small sensor cameras. It is paired with a beautiful 12x Zeiss lens and the ability to record in the XAVC codec at 50mbps. The image quality is truly fantastic.

Two powered XLR inputs are found on the handle, just as you’d expect. It has Wifi built-in for extra control and believe it or not, records to SD Cards! Awesome. The zoom rocker works well and at only 1.4kg, overall it’s very manageable to hand-hold for quite some time.

As if that wasn’t enough, it also sports built-in ND filters and an HD-SDI output as well as the expected HDMI. All of these inclusions open the PXWX70 up to a much larger audience, especially at this price point.

Yes, a 4K upgrade will be available later this year. We don’t have a date as yet and we don’t expect it to be free so if 4K is a high priority for you, this may or may not be the best option.
