GoPro have offered 4K video capabilities since the end of 2012 with the Hero 3 Black edition and Sony has finally stepped into the 4K POV camera game with the FDR-X1000V, their latest flagship Action Cam.

It’s been released along with the HDR-AS200V, an upgrade for the AS100V. Like the previous model, both new cameras similarly have a spashproof, shockproof design so for light use, you can do without the underwater housing. Sony have said the image stabilisation in both models is their best yet in an action cam – it’s called Advanced SteadyShot. To me this is enough to jump from GoPro who don’t and haven’t ever had stabilisation in any camera.

The AS200 can use the same housings and mounts you’ve had for older models, however the X1000 has the record button on the top rather than the back, so you’ll need to use the supplied underwater housing only. You can, of course, still use the same mounts.

Both models have a great new Zeiss lens and an 8.8 Megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor. The AS200 can record in Full HD at up to 120 fps (and 720p at 240 fps, 100mbps – really slow!) and the X1000 can record in 4K at 30 fps and 100mbps.

As you can see Sony have a really solid offering with these new Action Cams. There are plenty of helpful comparisons on Youtube so definitely check them out before making your next POV camera purchase.
