One of the most common questions we get asked at VP is, “Should I get a component home theatre system or one of the ones that come in a box?” And the answer is “Yes, you should.” We’re big on audio and either of these will be a big upgrade to your TV speakers. Like most things though, there’s pros and cons to both sides and everyone’s different, so hopefully we can shed some light on it.

Home-Theatre-In-A-Box systems (lets call them HTIBs) are usually very cost effective, they’re all inclusive, they can be quite compact and most of the time they come with a bluray or DVD player built into the head unit. These days, they usually sound pretty decent, too. All good things.

How to get your complete home theatre experience…
Component systems on the other hand are often more expensive, larger, bought as separate parts and do NOT come with a built-in bluray player. So what’s the up side? Well, if you’re serious about home theatre, the sound quality is significantly improved, you have the ability to mix and match speakers and other components of the system to your liking, and there is a lot more customization that can be done. Additionally, unlike HTIBs, if one particular part of your component system needs repairing you can simply have the one part repaired or replaced, rather that you whole home theatre – very important.

Often, for the same price as a reasonable HTIB, you could start with an amplifier and a pair of great speakers – you’re up and running. You can then add a sub, centre speaker and rear speakers as needed and as you’re able to. This is generally what we’d recommend for most people as it means you’re getting something that’s very high quality and it’s also completely upgradeable, giving you great flexibility.

As always, we’re happy to help if you do have any questions so call us on 1300 VIDEOPRO, email us or jump on LiveChat if you have any questions.
