We’re really excited for the new 2015 products across the board but two products in particular that have really caught my attention are the HC-VX870 and the HC-WX970 which are the top two consumer camcorders from Panasonic.
They’re quite similar in most regards and are really well spec’d for their price point, especially when you consider the drop in the Aussie dollar since this time last year. You get a beautiful F/1.8-3.6 Leica lens paired with a 1/2.3” BSI MOS sensor. The 20x Optical zoom range covers the 35mm equivalent of 30.8-626mm.
With both the 870 and 970 you can use a smart phone to add sub camera shots. These appear like a picture-in-picture in the recorded image so you have the flexibility to capture different angles or your reaction to what’s being recorded. The 970 model has a second camera built into the LCD screen so you can achieve this without using a phone or tablet.
The maximum resolution possible is 3840 x 2160 at 25fps which is great. In Full HD, you can bump the frame rate up to a maximum of 100fps for awesome slow-motion shots. With all the extra resolution in the sensor, Panasonic put it to use for extra digital stabilisation and digital zoom which both work very well.
Overall a really good offering and this is the lowest price we’ve seen for a consumer camcorder with decent 4K recording. We expect both models will be very popular over the next 12 months.
